Superman / Spider-Man Crossover Review: Multiple Stories Deliver Big Time (Better Than Deadpool/Batman!)

The big Superman / Spider-Man DC/Marvel crossover dropped this week and it’s genuinely good — I’d even say it’s better than the Deadpool/Batman crossover. Lots of solid stories packed into one issue, not just a cash grab.

The Setup

The main story teams up Superman and Spider-Man against Brainiac and Doc Ock. Superman is a little weakened by some space rock. This leads Spider-Man to fight with everything he’s got to restore Superman’s full ability to save the day. The two icons bounce off each other really well — it’s a fun and natural pairing for the tights wearing journalists that plays out nicely.

The Cool (and Varied) Parts

This issue is packed with several short stories and team-ups:

  • The Lois Lane and Mary Jane pairing of two damsels (maybe not so in distress) is interesting. The Gambit reveal was a cool surprise. It was an okay idea overall, but not my favorite execution.
  • The Superboy Prime with the symbiote-suited Spider-Man was solid meta experience around being a hero vs playing a hero.
  • Spider-Man 2099 teaming with a young Superman and the Batman Beyond (teeth through the suit and all) entry was really fun — it was great seeing those three heroes together.
  • Jimmy Olsen and Carnage had some great meta jokes (the bit about not hyphenating Spider-Man making you a tourist was hilarious).
  • The Jonathan Kent and Ben Parker “bridge” story was one of my absolute favorites. The idea of both heroes talking about being raised by great men and how that shaped them was a fantastic concept and really hit home.
  • Jameson and Lois Lane’s TV back-and-forth was a cute little crossover media story.
  • The Power Girl and Punisher “date” story had a fun twist and was surprisingly more enjoyable than I anticipated.

There wasn’t a single story I hated, which is rare for these big crossover books. Some sadly felt a little short or like they were just setting up something much bigger (we may never see), but the whole package was very solid.

Final Verdict

This is a really strong crossover that delivers exactly what you’d hope for — fun team-ups, good character moments, and solid action. It has me hoping we get more of these stories continued in the future.
