I picked up The Fury of Firestorm #1 on a total whim after seeing some good buzz, and honestly, it’s very well done. It’s a strong, splashy debut that kicks off the series in a really chaotic and intriguing way.
The Setup
The issue opens with this huge, almost biblical “creation of the Earth” – but in reverse – style intro that quickly escalates into total chaos. We get pulled back into the world of Ronald Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein — the two minds that used to form the Firestorm Matrix. Now both have been pushed out, and things are clearly not right.
The Cool (and Interesting) Parts
- Firehawk (Ronald Raymond’s old girlfriend) gets brought back into the mix.
- We learn both Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein have been pushed out of the Firestorm Matrix, with Raymond seeming trapped in the mind.
- Firestorm is straight-up volatile and dangerous now — turning people into glass, going on destructive rampages, and killing people.
- Some really cool flashbacks are done in that classic older comic book style.
- Firehawk basically admits they can’t stop him alone and realizes they need to find Dr. Martin Stein, who knows Ronald best.
The story leaves you with a ton of questions, but it sets up the new series in a very intriguing way.
Final Verdict
This is a really solid first issue. It’s splashy, volatile, and full of classic Firestorm energy while still feeling fresh. I went in not knowing much and came out impressed. Definitely a great pickup and one I’m looking forward to continuing.
